Common Eider at Varanger
Out at the far northeastern edge of Norway, where the Varanger Peninsula's treeless tundra meets the Barents Sea, Common Eiders gather along the wind-scoured coastal cliffs & open fjords well above the Arctic Circle. April visitors joining Winter Wildlife of Arctic Varanger will find this stark, exposed coastline an excellent vantage point for observing the species against a raw, elemental Arctic backdrop. The open fjords offer clear sightlines, making this stretch of coast a rewarding stop for building up a portfolio of eider images amid the peninsula's characteristically bleak scenery. Dress for the wind, though, as the landscape here offers little in the way of shelter.
