Long-tailed Duck at Varanger

Long-tailed Duck are among the sought-after subjects awaiting photographers on the Varanger Peninsula, a remote spit of tundra at the northeastern tip of Norway's Finnmark region, thrust out into the Barents Sea well above the Arctic Circle. The open fjords & wind-scoured coastal cliffs here provide a suitably wild, elemental backdrop for capturing this species against the stark Arctic scenery. Visiting during April, as our Winter Wildlife of Arctic Varanger holiday does, offers photographers the chance to work this dramatic, treeless landscape while conditions remain typical for the season. It's a location that rewards patience & a willingness to embrace the raw, open character of the far north.
