Marsh Owl at Great Rift Valley
The Great Rift Valley's grassland margins, threaded between soda lakes & acacia woodland, give way at dusk to the low, buoyant flight of the Marsh Owl as it quarters the open ground. Photographers joining the Wildlife of Shompole Wilderness holiday in October have the chance to catch this species against the dramatic backdrop of the Valley's escarpments & volcanic peaks. The vast, open terrain of the savannah & scrubby bushveld offers clear sightlines for capturing the owl's characteristic low hunting passes. Patience through the fading light of the Rift Valley evenings is rewarded with a memorable study of this atmospheric species in its element.
