Species profile
About this species
The African Fish Eagle is a large raptor found across sub-Saharan Africa, renowned for its distinctive & evocative call that is often considered the quintessential sound of Africa. It has a striking appearance with a white head & chest, chestnut brown body, & bold black wings. It is closely associated with large bodies of open water where it hunts fish by swooping down & snatching prey from the surface with its powerful talons.
African Fish Eagles are found in habitats closely tied to large open bodies of water, including lakes, rivers, reservoirs, & estuaries. They strongly prefer areas with tall trees nearby for perching & nesting, & are widespread across sub-Saharan Africa wherever suitable aquatic environments exist.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon light provide the best conditions for photography, when the eagles are most active in hunting. The dry season, typically June to October depending on region, is ideal as lower water levels concentrate fish & increase hunting activity near the shore.
Position yourself near a prominent perch such as a dead tree overhanging water, as these eagles favour such spots for resting & scanning for prey. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1600s to freeze the dramatic action when the bird dives to catch fish. A focal length of 400mm or longer is recommended to fill the frame whilst maintaining a respectful distance that avoids disturbing the bird.
