Species profile

About this species

The Greater Kudu is a large woodland antelope native to eastern & southern Africa, recognised by the males' spectacular long spiral horns & pale vertical body stripes on a grey-brown coat. Females are hornless & slightly smaller, with both sexes displaying large, rounded ears & a distinctive white chevron between the eyes. They are browsers by nature, feeding on leaves, shoots & fruits across a range of woodland & bushveld habitats.

Habitat

Woodland savanna, bushveld & rocky hillsides with dense browse vegetation, particularly areas with mixed acacia & broadleaf woodland across eastern & southern Africa.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon light during the dry season (May to October) offers the best conditions, as kudu visit waterholes more frequently & vegetation is thinner, improving visibility.

Approach

Position yourself near waterholes or salt licks during early morning when kudu are most active & approachable for close portrait shots. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture the intricate spiral horns & facial markings without disturbing the animals. Shoot from a low angle when possible to add drama & emphasise the impressive stature of bulls against open woodland backdrops.
