Species profile

About this species

The Bald Eagle is a large bird of prey native to North America, instantly recognisable by its striking white head & tail contrasting with a dark brown body. It is the national bird & symbol of the United States, with adults reaching a wingspan of up to 2.4 metres. Bald Eagles are powerful hunters that favour fish as their primary prey, often found near large bodies of open water.

Habitat

Bald Eagles are typically found near large bodies of open water including lakes, rivers, reservoirs & coastal areas where fish are plentiful. They nest in tall, mature trees - often conifers - close to water, & are commonly spotted across Canada, the United States & northern Mexico.

Best time

Winter months - particularly December to February - are ideal as eagles congregate near open water & are more easily spotted on bare branches. Early morning light provides the warmest tones & the birds are often most active just after sunrise when hunting.

Approach

Position yourself near the water's edge at a low angle to capture the eagle in flight against an uncluttered background, using a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1600s to freeze wing movement. Scout known perch sites such as tall dead trees near water, as eagles return to favourite spots repeatedly, giving you time to compose your shot. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 500mm to maintain a respectful distance & avoid disturbing the bird's natural behaviour.
