Field notes
Photography notes
Summer months from June to August are ideal, when large numbers gather at rookeries for breeding season. Early morning provides the best natural light & increased animal activity on haul-out rocks.
Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to photograph from a safe distance without disturbing the colony. Focus on the eyes & facial expressions during social interactions, as these moments reveal compelling behaviour. Visit established haul-out sites early in the morning when the animals are active & the light is soft & warm.
