Species profile
About this species
The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a semi-aquatic mammal found across Europe, Asia & parts of North Africa. It has a streamlined body, dense waterproof fur & a powerful tail adapted for swimming in rivers, lakes & coastal waters. Otters are known for their playful behaviour & are a key indicator species of healthy freshwater ecosystems.
Eurasian otters inhabit clean, unpolluted rivers, streams, lakes & coastal shorelines with dense bankside vegetation such as reeds & overhanging tree roots that provide shelter & holts for resting & breeding.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon are the most productive times, particularly during autumn & winter when vegetation is lower & otters are more active in daylight hours to meet higher energy demands.
Position yourself low to the water's edge & remain still well before the otter appears, as they are highly alert to movement & sound. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the otter's quick movements both in & out of the water. Scout your location at low tide or after rain when otters are more active & predictable in their hunting routes along riverbanks.
