Species profile
About this species
The Eurasian Otter is a semi-aquatic mammal found across Europe, Asia & parts of North Africa. It has a streamlined body with a thick, waterproof coat of brown fur, a broad flattened head & a long tapering tail suited to life in water. It is a skilled & agile hunter, feeding primarily on fish but also taking amphibians, crustaceans & small mammals.
Eurasian Otters inhabit clean freshwater rivers, streams, lakes & coastal estuaries with abundant bankside vegetation. They favour undisturbed waterways with good fish stocks & dense riparian cover such as tree roots, reed beds & overhanging vegetation that provide shelter & holting sites.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon offer the best light & coincide with peak activity periods. Spring & summer are ideal as otters are more active & cubs may be visible alongside adults. Winter can also be productive as bare bankside vegetation offers clearer sightlines.
Scout riverbanks & lakesides in advance, looking for spraints (droppings) & tracks to identify regular routes & holts. Position yourself low to the water & remain still & patient, as otters are shy & easily disturbed by sudden movement. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to maintain a respectful distance while capturing sharp, close detail of the animal in its natural environment.
