Species profile
About this species
The Grey Heron is a large wading bird found across Europe, Asia & Africa, recognised by its grey & white plumage, black eye stripe & long yellow bill. It stands up to 1 metre tall with a wingspan of nearly 2 metres, making it one of the largest birds commonly seen in British wetlands. It feeds primarily on fish, frogs & small mammals, hunting with remarkable patience at the water's edge.
Grey Herons favour freshwater habitats including rivers, lakes, marshes & ponds, but can also be found on estuaries, coastal shores & even garden fish ponds across the UK & wider Europe.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning during spring & autumn offers the best light & activity, as herons are most active at dawn when feeding. Winter months can also be rewarding as bare trees & frost add atmosphere to images.
Approach slowly & use natural cover such as reeds or bankside vegetation to get close without disturbing the bird. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the striking strike action when the heron lunges for prey. Shooting at water level adds drama & produces attractive background blur that isolates the subject beautifully.
