Species profile
About this species
The Great Egret is a large, elegant wading bird found across much of the world, recognised by its all-white plumage, long black legs, & yellow-orange bill. It inhabits wetlands, marshes, lakes, & coastal areas where it hunts for fish, frogs, & small invertebrates with patient, still stalking behaviour. During the breeding season it develops striking, long ornamental plumes known as aigrettes along its back.
Great Egrets are typically found in wetland habitats including freshwater marshes, swamps, lakes, rivers, & coastal estuaries. They favour shallow water where wading & hunting are easily achieved, & often nest colonially in trees or shrubs close to water.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon light offer the best conditions, as the soft golden light complements the bird's white plumage without causing overexposure. Spring & early summer during the breeding season provide the added interest of ornamental plumes & potential nesting behaviour.
Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture detail without disturbing the bird's hunting behaviour. Position yourself low to the water's surface to achieve a pleasing, blurred background & to shoot at eye level with the subject. Look for moments when the bird strikes at prey, as this action shot can be the most dramatic & rewarding image to capture.
