Species profile

About this species

The Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark is a small, compact lark found across arid & semi-arid regions of Africa, the Middle East, & South Asia. The male is striking with a bold black crown, face, & underparts contrasted with white cheek patches & chestnut-brown upperparts. The female is far more cryptically coloured in sandy-brown tones, providing excellent camouflage against dry, open ground.

Habitat

Dry open plains, stony desert, semi-arid scrubland, & bare cultivated ground with sparse vegetation across Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, & the Indian subcontinent.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon during the dry season offer the best light & increased activity, particularly during the breeding season when males perform display flights.

Approach

Approach slowly & low to the ground as these birds are easily flushed, using a vehicle as a mobile hide where possible. Focus on the male during display flights or when perched on a prominent rock or termite mound to capture its bold plumage contrast. In strong midday light the black areas can lose detail, so aim for softer angled light to retain texture & colour in both the dark & pale plumage regions.
