Species profile
About this species
The fennec fox is the world's smallest wild canid, native to the Sahara Desert & other arid regions of North Africa. It is instantly recognisable by its extraordinarily large ears, which help dissipate heat & locate prey beneath the sand. Its thick, pale sandy-coloured coat provides camouflage in its desert habitat while also insulating it against cold nights.
Arid sandy deserts & semi-arid regions of North Africa, including the Sahara Desert, where they burrow into sand dunes & scrubland areas with sparse vegetation.

Field notes
Photography notes
Dawn & dusk throughout the year, particularly in cooler months between October & March when the animals are more active & the desert light is most favourable for photography.
Photograph fennec foxes during the golden hours of dawn & dusk when the warm light complements their sandy-coloured fur beautifully. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to avoid disturbing their natural behaviour, as they are shy & easily startled. A fast shutter speed of 1/500s or higher is recommended to freeze their quick, agile movements.
