Species profile

About this species

Chapman's Blue is a small butterfly belonging to the family Lycaenidae, found across parts of southern Europe & North Africa. The male displays vivid blue upperwings with a narrow dark border, while the female is predominantly brown with orange submarginal spots. It is closely related to the Common Blue but can be distinguished by subtle differences in the underwing markings & habitat preference.

Habitat

Dry, rocky hillsides & scrubby grasslands in southern Europe & North Africa, often on limestone or chalk substrates where its larval foodplants such as Ononis species grow in abundance.

Best time

Late spring to late summer, particularly May through August, on warm sunny mornings between 9am & 11am when adults are most active & likely to bask with open wings.

Approach

Approach slowly & low to the ground during warm sunny spells when the butterflies are basking with wings open to capture the brilliant blue colouration of the male. Use a macro lens in the 90-105mm range to achieve a flattering working distance without disturbing the subject. Early morning when temperatures are cooler will find individuals less active & more tolerant of a close approach, allowing sharper & more detailed shots.
