Species profile

About this species

The Queen of Spain Fritillary is a medium-sized butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae, recognised by its distinctive orange-brown upperwings patterned with black spots. Its underwings are particularly striking, featuring large, silvery-white spots that make it one of the most easily identifiable fritillaries in Europe. It is a strong, fast flier found across Europe, North Africa & parts of Asia, often favouring open, sunny habitats.

Habitat

Open, sunny habitats including flowery meadows, chalk downland, wasteland, dry grassland & disturbed ground with an abundance of nectar-rich flowers & violet species as larval foodplants.

Best time

The species is best photographed on warm, sunny days between March & October, with peak activity in mid-morning when temperatures have risen & the butterfly is actively basking or feeding. In northern Europe, late summer generations in August & September can offer excellent opportunities.

Approach

Approach slowly when the butterfly is basking on low vegetation or flowers, as it is easily startled & will take flight quickly. Use a macro lens or telephoto lens in the 100-200mm range to capture the intricate silver spots on the underwings without disturbing the subject. Shooting from a low angle whilst the butterfly feeds on nectar plants will provide a pleasing background blur & highlight the wing detail.
