Common Redshank Photography Holidays

Tringa totanus

Species profile

About this species

The Common Redshank is a medium-sized wading bird belonging to the sandpiper family, instantly recognisable by its bright orange-red legs & bill base. It is a highly alert & vocal species, often acting as a sentinel bird that warns other waders of approaching danger with its loud, piercing calls. Found across much of Europe & Asia, it breeds on moorlands & wet grasslands before moving to coastal mudflats & estuaries in winter.

Habitat

Breeds on wet grasslands, moorlands & saltmarshes, wintering on coastal mudflats, estuaries & sheltered shorelines across the UK & Europe.

Best time

Early morning during autumn & winter on estuaries & coastal mudflats when low tide coincides with soft golden light. August to March offers the largest concentrations of birds, with overcast days providing even, diffused light ideal for capturing the rich red-orange tones of the legs & bill.

Approach

Approach slowly & use a low angle by lying flat or crouching near the waterline to achieve eye-level shots that create a more intimate & compelling perspective. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a respectful distance, as Redshanks are notoriously skittish & will flush quickly if disturbed. Seek out locations where birds are feeding on exposed mudflats at low tide, allowing you to capture natural foraging behaviour with pleasing reflections in shallow water pools.
