Species profile

About this species

The Dunlin is a small wading bird commonly found along coastlines & estuaries across the Northern Hemisphere. It has a distinctive drooped bill tip & in breeding plumage displays a striking black belly patch with rufous upperparts. During winter it adopts a more subdued grey & white colouration, often gathering in large flocks that perform spectacular aerial murmurations over mudflats.

Habitat

Dunlins favour intertidal mudflats, sandy beaches & estuaries during winter & migration. They breed on upland moorland, blanket bogs & Arctic tundra, favouring wet areas with low vegetation cover.

Best time

Early morning or late afternoon during spring & autumn migration offers the best light & bird activity. Spring is ideal for breeding plumage, whilst autumn & winter provide opportunities to photograph large roosting flocks at high tide.

Approach

Position yourself low to the ground or at water level to achieve eye-level shots that create a more intimate & compelling perspective. Shoot during golden hour when the warm light enhances the rich rufous tones of breeding plumage & adds depth to flock shots. Focus on the edges of feeding flocks to capture sharp individual portraits whilst still conveying the density of the group behind.

Trips featuring Dunlin

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Dunlin is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Dunlin in Iceland. During our photography holidays, the Dunlin is often photographed alongside Arctic Skua, Arctic Tern, Atlantic Puffin, Black Guillemot, Black-legged Kittiwake, & Common Eider. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year.
