Species profile

About this species

The Common Snipe is a stocky wading bird found across wetlands in Europe, Asia & the Americas. It is well known for its exceptionally long bill, cryptic brown & buff streaked plumage, & its distinctive 'drumming' display flight produced by air rushing through its outer tail feathers. A secretive bird by nature, it tends to crouch low in vegetation, making it notoriously difficult to spot.

Habitat

Found in boggy moorland, wet meadows, marshes, river floodplains & freshwater wetland edges with dense low vegetation such as rushes, sedges & reed beds.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon during spring & autumn offer the best light & activity. Spring is ideal for capturing the aerial drumming display, while autumn & winter bring higher numbers to wetland reserves.

Approach

Approach marshy & boggy habitats slowly & quietly, as the snipe will flush suddenly if disturbed - patience is essential for close shots. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 500mm & shoot from a low angle, ideally lying prone near reed beds or sedge margins to achieve a pleasing background blur. During the spring display season, scan the sky for the dramatic 'drumming' display flights which offer excellent opportunities for in-flight action shots.
