Species profile
About this species
The Eurasian Bullfinch is a stocky, medium-sized finch found across Europe & Asia, instantly recognisable by the male's vivid rose-red breast & black cap. Females share the same bold patterning but display a softer pinkish-brown colouring in place of the male's striking red. They are relatively shy birds, often found in pairs or small groups feeding quietly in woodland edges & hedgerows.
Bullfinches favour deciduous & mixed woodland edges, hedgerows, orchards, scrubland & mature gardens with dense shrubs. They are commonly found wherever there is a good supply of buds, berries & seeds, particularly in areas with hawthorn, blackthorn & fruit trees.

Field notes
Photography notes
Winter months from November to February offer the best opportunities, as food scarcity draws Bullfinches closer to gardens & woodland edges. Early morning light provides warm, soft illumination that complements the male's rich red colouring particularly well.
Approach slowly & use natural cover such as hedgerows to avoid disturbing the bird, as Bullfinches are easily startled. Set up near berry-laden shrubs or fruit trees in autumn & winter, where birds will return repeatedly to feed, allowing you to pre-focus & wait patiently. Use a wide aperture to separate the bird from busy background foliage & help the vivid plumage stand out clearly.
