Species profile

About this species

The Siberian Jay is a medium-sized corvid found across the boreal forests of northern Europe & Asia. It has soft, fluffy plumage in shades of grey-brown with rusty-orange patches on the tail & wings. Known for its bold & inquisitive nature, it is often remarkably approachable around human activity in its forest habitat.

Habitat

Dense boreal taiga forests dominated by spruce & pine across Scandinavia, Russia & Siberia, often found in old-growth forest with abundant lichen & undergrowth.

Best time

Winter months from November to February are ideal, as the birds are highly visible against snow & actively forage near human settlements. Early morning light in the boreal forest offers warm tones & soft shadows that complement the birds muted plumage.

Approach

Siberian Jays are notably tame & can be lured close by making soft sounds or offering food near boreal forest clearings, making it easier to achieve frame-filling shots. Use a telephoto lens in the range of 300-500mm to capture natural behaviour whilst minimising disturbance in low-light forest conditions. Shoot in aperture priority mode with exposure compensation dialled up slightly, as the birds dark eye can fool metering systems in bright snow environments.

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Siberian Jay in Norway & Sweden. During our photography holidays, the Siberian Jay is often photographed alongside White-tailed Eagle, Arctic Redpoll, Bohemian Waxwing, Common Redpoll, Eurasian Bullfinch, & Golden Eagle.
