Species profile
About this species
The Northern Goshawk is a large, powerful raptor found across the Northern Hemisphere, recognised by its slate-grey plumage, pale underparts with fine grey barring, & distinctive white supercilium. It is the largest of the accipiters, built for agile flight through dense woodland where it pursues prey such as birds & small mammals at high speed. Known for its fierce temperament, it will aggressively defend its nest against intruders, including humans.
The Northern Goshawk favours large tracts of mature & old-growth forest, including both coniferous & mixed woodland. It is typically found in boreal forests across northern Europe, Asia & North America, as well as montane forests at higher altitudes.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early spring during the breeding season offers the best opportunities, as adults are active around nest sites. Early morning light in mature woodland provides soft, directional illumination that suits this species well.
Position yourself near known nest sites in early spring when adults are actively returning with food, but maintain a respectful distance to avoid disturbing breeding behaviour. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to capture sharp detail whilst remaining unobtrusive, & a fast shutter speed of 1/1000s or higher to freeze the bird's swift, dynamic flight. Wearing muted, earth-toned clothing & remaining still against a tree trunk will help you blend into the woodland setting & reduce the chance of alarming the bird.
