Best time

Late June to early August is the peak flight period, with warm sunny mornings between 9am & 1pm offering the best opportunities when adults are active & basking.

Approach

Approach slowly & crouch low to capture the intricate wing patterns at eye level, using a macro lens for fine detail. Photograph on warm sunny mornings when the butterfly is basking with wings open, allowing clear views of the upper surface markings. Use a wide aperture such as f/4 to f/5.6 to separate the subject from background vegetation & draw attention to the delicate wing patterning.
