Field notes
Photography notes
Mid-summer, typically July to early August, during the warmest part of the day between late morning & early afternoon when the butterflies are most active in alpine meadows.
Approach slowly & from a low angle to capture the intricate eyespot patterns on the wings without startling the butterfly. Overcast conditions diffuse harsh sunlight & help reveal the subtle tonal variations in the dark brown wing colouration. Focus on capturing the butterfly at rest on grass stems or wildflowers, using a macro lens to highlight the fine detail of the wing markings.
