About this species
The Marbled White is a distinctive medium-sized butterfly found across much of Europe, easily recognised by its bold black & white chequered wing pattern. Despite its name, it belongs to the Satyrinae subfamily rather than the whites. It is a grassland species that often gathers in large numbers on warm, flower-rich slopes.
Unimproved calcareous grasslands, chalk downlands, woodland rides & flower-rich meadows, particularly those with tall grasses & abundant wildflowers.

Mid-June to late August, with peak activity in July. Warm sunny mornings between 9am & 11am offer the best opportunities as butterflies bask & feed before temperatures rise.
Approach slowly & from a low angle to capture the striking wing pattern against colourful wildflowers such as knapweed or scabious, on which they frequently feed. Early morning is ideal as butterflies are less active & will hold their wings open longer for detailed shots. A macro lens in the 90-105mm range works well for close-up portraits while maintaining a comfortable working distance.
