Larus hyperboreus

Explore our Glaucous Gull photography holidays in Norway & Iceland, built around field time with this species during the best seasonal conditions. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Glaucous Gull is a large, pale seagull found across Arctic & subarctic regions, recognisable by its white wingtips & pale grey upperparts. It is one of the largest gulls in the world, with a powerful build & a fierce, predatory nature. During winter, it often disperses southward to coastal areas, harbours & estuaries in search of food.

Habitat

Glaucous Gulls breed on Arctic & subarctic coastlines, cliffs & tundra regions. Outside the breeding season they are found along rocky & sandy coastlines, harbours, estuaries, open sea & occasionally inland rubbish tips & reservoirs.

Best time

Winter months from November to February offer the best chances in northern Europe & North America, as birds move south from their Arctic breeding grounds. Early morning light provides warm, soft tones ideal for capturing the pale plumage without harsh shadows.

Approach

Visit harbours & fishing ports in winter where Glaucous Gulls gather near boats & fish processing facilities, offering close-range opportunities. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze wing movement when capturing birds in flight against open skies. Position yourself at water level where possible to achieve a clean background & a more intimate, engaging perspective with the bird.
