Species profile

About this species

The Purple Sandpiper is a small, stocky wading bird that breeds in the Arctic & sub-Arctic regions & winters along rocky coastlines. It has dark, purplish-grey plumage on its upperparts with a streaked breast, an orange-yellow base to its bill, & yellow-orange legs. Despite its name, the purple colouration is subtle & most visible at close range in good light.

Habitat

Rocky coastlines, wave-washed reefs, jetties & sea walls during winter. Breeds on Arctic & sub-Arctic tundra, stony upland plateaus & mountain heath in summer.

Best time

Winter months from October to March are ideal when birds gather on rocky shores & jetties. Early morning light on calm winter days provides the best conditions for capturing detail in the dark plumage.

Approach

Approach slowly & low along rocky shores to get close without disturbing the birds, as they tend to be relatively tolerant of careful observers. Use a wide aperture to separate the bird from busy rocky backgrounds & aim for eye-level shots by lying on the rocks. Overcast conditions help reduce harsh shadows & bring out the subtle purple sheen in the plumage that bright sunlight can wash out.
