Field notes
Photography notes
Winter months offer the best opportunities as large numbers gather at coastal sites & fishing harbours. Early morning light during autumn & winter provides warm, directional light that complements the bird's bold black & white plumage.
Position yourself low to the ground or water level to achieve eye-level shots that create a more engaging & natural perspective. Shoot during overcast conditions to avoid harsh shadows on the white plumage, which can easily become overexposed in bright sunlight. Visit busy harbours or fishing ports where birds gather closely, allowing you to capture natural feeding behaviour & interactions between individuals.
