Species profile
About this species
The Keel-Billed Toucan is a strikingly colourful bird native to Central America & northern South America, renowned for its enormous multi-coloured bill which can measure up to 20 cm in length. Its plumage is predominantly black with a vivid yellow chest & cheeks, complemented by a bill displaying shades of green, orange, red & blue. Despite its large bill, the bird is surprisingly agile & is a social species often seen in small flocks moving through the forest canopy.
Keel-Billed Toucans inhabit tropical & subtropical lowland rainforests, forest edges & clearings, typically ranging from sea level up to around 1900 metres elevation across southern Mexico, Central America & northern Colombia & Venezuela.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning hours between dawn & 9am offer the best light & highest activity levels. The dry season from December to April is generally considered optimal as vegetation is less dense, improving visibility & sighting opportunities.
Position yourself at fruiting trees early in the morning where toucans regularly gather to feed, allowing you to capture natural behaviour & vivid colour in soft light. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a respectful distance while achieving sharp detail on the bird's spectacular bill & plumage. A fast shutter speed of 1/1000s or higher is recommended to freeze movement, as toucans are active & frequently shift position whilst feeding or interacting with flock members.
