Species profile

About this species

The Lesser Black-backed Gull is a large seabird native to Europe & western Asia, recognised by its slate-grey to dark black back & wings contrasting with a white body. It has yellow legs & a yellow bill with a red spot, distinguishing it from the similar Herring Gull. The species is migratory, with many birds wintering in Africa & the Mediterranean region.

Habitat

Lesser Black-backed Gulls are typically found along coastlines, estuaries, harbours & large inland reservoirs. They breed on coastal cliffs, sand dunes & flat rooftops in urban areas. Outside the breeding season, they frequent farmland, rubbish tips & open water bodies across Europe & Africa.

Best time

Late spring & summer are ideal for photographing breeding adults in full plumage, particularly May to July. Early morning light provides warm tones & soft shadows that enhance the contrast between the dark back & white body. Coastal locations during autumn migration can also offer excellent opportunities as large flocks gather.

Approach

Photograph these gulls at harbours & fishing ports where they gather in large numbers, making it easier to get close-up shots without disturbing them. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze wing motion when capturing birds in flight against a bright sky. Position yourself at water level when possible to achieve a more flattering & engaging perspective that separates the subject from a cluttered background.
