Long-tailed Skua Photography Holidays

Stercorarius longicaudus

Explore our Long-tailed Skua photography holidays in Iceland, timed so photographers have strong chances to work with this species during the long daylight hours of the Arctic summer. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Long-tailed Skua is a slender, graceful seabird known for its extraordinarily elongated central tail feathers, which can extend up to 20 cm in breeding adults. It is the smallest of the skuas, with a buoyant, tern-like flight that distinguishes it from its heavier relatives. Breeding adults display a striking contrast of grey, black & white plumage, while juveniles show a more complex barred pattern.

Habitat

Breeds on open Arctic & sub-Arctic tundra, often far inland. Outside the breeding season it is pelagic, spending most of its time over open ocean. During migration it can be seen from coastal headlands & offshore.

Best time

Late May to July on Arctic breeding grounds offers the best opportunities, particularly during the long daylight hours of the Arctic summer. During autumn migration, coastal watchpoints in September & October can yield excellent flight photography.

Approach

Approach slowly & use a long telephoto lens of at least 500mm to capture flight shots without disturbing the bird. Shoot during overcast conditions to avoid harsh shadows on the pale underparts & bring out the detail in the plumage. On breeding grounds, position yourself low to the ground to achieve eye-level shots & a pleasing background blur.
