Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during the dry season - typically June to October in East Africa - when crocodiles bask on riverbanks & prey animals congregate at water sources, offering excellent photographic opportunities.
Position yourself at a low angle near the water's edge to capture compelling compositions that emphasise the crocodile's scale & texture. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a safe distance whilst achieving sharp, detailed shots of the animal's scales & eyes. Photograph during feeding or basking behaviour when the crocodile is still, allowing you to use a lower ISO & achieve crisp imagery in good light.
