Red-eyed Tree Frog Photography Holidays

Agalychnis callidryas

Explore our Red-eyed Tree Frog photography holidays in Costa Rica, planned to give photographers proper time with this species during the rainy season from May to November. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The Red-eyed Tree Frog is a strikingly colourful arboreal amphibian native to the rainforests of Central America & parts of southern Mexico. It is instantly recognisable by its vivid green body, bright red eyes, orange feet & blue-&-yellow striped flanks. Despite its eye-catching appearance, it is not venomous & relies on its startling colouration to momentarily disorient predators through a defence mechanism known as startle colouration.

Habitat

Red-eyed Tree Frogs inhabit tropical & subtropical lowland rainforests, typically near ponds, streams & other standing water sources at elevations from sea level up to around 1,250 metres, primarily across Central America including Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras & southern Mexico.

Best time

The best time to photograph Red-eyed Tree Frogs is at night during the rainy season from May to November, when they are most active & can be found calling & breeding near ponds & slow-moving water sources.

Approach

Use a macro lens in the 90-105mm range to capture fine detail in the eyes & skin texture without disturbing the frog. Shoot at night with a ring flash or off-camera flash to bring out the vivid colours & achieve a sharp focus on the iconic red eyes. Position yourself at eye level with the frog on a leaf or branch to create a natural & engaging composition, using a narrow depth of field to separate the subject from the background.

Trips featuring Red-eyed Tree Frog

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

Photographing Red-eyed Tree Frog Perhaps the single most iconic image in Central American wildlife photography, the Red-eyed Tree Frog is a jewel of the Costa Rican rainforest: electric green body, vivid scarlet eyes with vertical gold-slit pupils, blue flanks, & brilliant orange feet. Perched on a broad-leafed Heliconia or Philodendron leaf, it is the archetype of Neotropical colour & a species where the difficulty is not finding a spectacular image - but finding a fresh take on one of the most photographed frogs in the world. Where NaturesLens Takes You NaturesLens photographs the Red-eyed Tree Frog on nocturnal sessions in the Caribbean lowland rainforests of Costa Rica, where the species is particularly abundant around forest ponds, streams, & vegetation over water. Night sessions at known breeding sites during or just after rain produce the richest opportunities, with frogs descending from the canopy to call, mate, & lay eggs. Photography Technique & Gear Night photography requires a macro or short telephoto (90-180mm macro or 300mm zoom) with a twin or ring flash for clean illumination. Shoot from frog eye-level whenever possible to engage the iconic red eye directly. Use a small aperture (f/11-f/16) to maximise depth of field across the eye & toe pads. A headtorch with a red-light mode preserves your night vision between shots. The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Red-eyed Tree Frog is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Red-eyed Tree Frog in Costa Rica. During our photography holidays, the Red-eyed Tree Frog is often photographed alongside Basilisk Lizard, Blue Jeans Poison Dart Frog, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, Collared Aracari, & Emerald Toucanet. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include amphibian macro photography, Costa Rican photography, Costa Rican wildlife, frog photography, macro photography of flowers, insects & other miniature flora & fauna, & macro photography subjects.
