Species profile

About this species

The Ruddy Turnstone is a small, stocky wading bird known for its striking black, white & chestnut plumage in breeding season. It gets its name from its distinctive behaviour of flipping over stones, shells & seaweed to find invertebrates beneath. It is a highly migratory species, breeding in the Arctic & wintering on coastlines across much of the world.

Habitat

Rocky shores, sandy beaches, mudflats & coastal jetties. During migration & winter it frequents coastlines worldwide, often found picking through seaweed, pebbles & shell debris along the tide line.

Best time

The best time to photograph Ruddy Turnstones is during spring & autumn migration when birds gather in larger numbers on beaches & rocky shores. Early morning light provides warm tones that complement the bird's colourful plumage, particularly in late April to May when birds are in their striking breeding plumage.

Approach

Approach slowly & keep a low profile by crouching or lying down on the beach to achieve eye-level shots that create a more engaging perspective. Focus on rocky shorelines or jetties where birds are actively foraging, as this behaviour produces dynamic & compelling images. Bright overcast conditions work well to reveal the rich chestnut & black tones of the plumage without harsh shadows.
