Species profile
About this species
The smooth-coated otter is the largest otter species found in Asia, recognised by its distinctive smooth, short fur which appears sleek when wet. It inhabits a range of freshwater environments across South & Southeast Asia, living in family groups that are highly social & vocal. The species is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss, pollution & hunting pressures.
Smooth-coated otters favour large rivers, lakes, reservoirs, mangrove swamps & coastal estuaries across South & Southeast Asia, often residing in areas with dense bankside vegetation that provides shelter & suitable holts for raising young.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during the dry season (November to March) when water levels are lower & otters concentrate around remaining water sources, making them easier to locate & photograph in good light.
Position yourself low & still near riverbanks or wetland edges at dawn when otters are most active, using natural vegetation as cover to avoid disturbing the group. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the otters agile movements in & around water, particularly when they are fishing or playing. A telephoto lens of 400mm or longer is recommended to maintain a respectful distance while still capturing detailed, frame-filling portraits of individuals & family interactions.
