Species profile

About this species

The Snail Kite is a medium-sized bird of prey found across wetland habitats in the Americas, renowned for its highly specialised diet consisting almost exclusively of freshwater apple snails. It has a distinctive hooked bill perfectly adapted for extracting snails from their shells, & the male displays striking slate-grey plumage with bright orange-red facial skin. This sociable raptor often forages in loose groups, flying low over marshes in a buoyant, leisurely manner.

Habitat

The Snail Kite inhabits freshwater marshes, shallow lakes, flooded savannahs & wetlands across Florida, Central America & South America, with a strong preference for areas supporting dense populations of apple snails amongst emergent aquatic vegetation.

Best time

Early morning & late afternoon light provide the best conditions year-round, with the dry season months of November through March being particularly productive as lower water levels concentrate birds in accessible areas. In Florida, the breeding season from February to July offers excellent behavioural photography opportunities.

Approach

Position yourself at the edge of open marshes or along canal banks where kites are known to forage, as they fly low & predictably over the water surface, giving excellent opportunities for flight shots. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1600s to freeze the kite in flight, & a telephoto lens of 400mm or longer to capture fine feather detail from a respectful distance. Look for birds perched on low shrubs or fence posts while extracting snails, as these stationary moments allow for sharply focussed portraits with a clean background.
