Species profile

About this species

The Strawberry Poison Dart Frog is a small, brightly coloured amphibian native to Central America, particularly common in Costa Rica & Panama. It is well known for its striking red colouration & highly variable colour morphs across different populations. The species derives its toxicity from its diet of mites & other small invertebrates in the wild.

Habitat

Tropical rainforests & lowland humid forests of Central America, typically found among leaf litter, low-lying vegetation & forest floors near streams & moist areas.

Best time

Mid-morning during the wet season (May to November) when the frogs are most active & the humid conditions keep them moving through leaf litter & low vegetation.

Approach

Use a macro lens to capture fine details of the frog's vivid colouration & skin texture at close range. Get low to the ground & shoot at the frog's eye level to create a more engaging & natural perspective. Be patient & move slowly, as these frogs are small & quick, & a steady hand or tripod will help you achieve sharp focus in low forest light.

Trips featuring Strawberry Poison Dart Frog

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

Photographing Strawberry Poison Dart Frog A tiny, jewel-bright amphibian & one of the most studied poison dart frogs in the world, the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog occurs in numerous colour morphs across Central America - from the classic red-&-blue of the Caribbean lowlands to the bizarre all-blue populations of Bocas del Toro. NaturesLens focuses on the vividly coloured Caribbean forms, where the species is active, conspicuous, & remarkably approachable for a frog. Its diurnal habits & bold colouration make it ideal for macro photography. Where NaturesLens Takes You NaturesLens photographs the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog in the rainforest floor habitats of Costa Rica’s Caribbean lowlands, particularly at locations with standing water, bromeliads, & mossy substrate where the species breeds & raises tadpoles. The species’ territorial & parental behaviours provide strong behavioural image opportunities. Photography Technique & Gear A 100mm macro captures the frog at comfortable working distance; a 150-180mm macro gives extra space on more wary individuals. Shoot from frog eye-level for engaging perspective & to include habitat context. Focus on the eye - even at small sizes, a sharp, glistening eye lifts a macro image from record shot to portrait. Avoid harsh direct flash; diffuse the light through a white card or purpose-built diffuser to keep the skin texture readable. The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog in Costa Rica. During our photography holidays, the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog is often photographed alongside Basilisk Lizard, Blue Jeans Poison Dart Frog, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, Collared Aracari, & Emerald Toucanet. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year. Photography themes commonly associated with this species include amphibian macro photography, Costa Rican photography, Costa Rican wildlife, frog photography, macro photography of flowers, insects & other miniature flora & fauna, & macro photography subjects.
