About this species

The Tree Grayling is a large butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae, found across central & southern Europe. It has a distinctive cryptic wing pattern of mottled brown & grey tones that provide excellent camouflage against tree bark. The species is associated with warm, dry woodland edges & scrubby habitats where its larval foodplants of various grasses grow.

Habitat

Best time

Mid-summer, typically July to August, is the peak flight period. Warm sunny mornings between 10am & 1pm are ideal, when butterflies are actively basking & feeding.

Approach

Approach slowly & carefully when the butterfly is basking on tree bark or rocks, as it will flush easily if disturbed. Use a macro lens or close-focusing telephoto to capture the intricate wing patterning without getting too close. Look for individuals that have settled with wings closed, as this displays the superb camouflage colouration to great effect.
