Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning hours shortly after dawn offer the best light & activity levels. The January timing of the Peru Ultimate Hummingbirds trip coincides with the Andean wet season, when fruiting trees attract tanagers reliably, making mid-morning foraging bouts particularly productive.
Position yourself at fruiting trees where flocks gather, as the bold red & white colouring contrasts beautifully against green foliage. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/800s to freeze movement as birds shift between branches. On the January Peru trip, mornings offer the best light & most active feeding behaviour, so plan to be in the field shortly after dawn.
