About this species

It is recognised by its striking white plumage, long curved red-orange bill, & bright red facial skin. These birds are highly social, often foraging & roosting in large flocks in shallow wetlands.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during the breeding season from April to August offer the best light & activity. Winter months in Florida & the Gulf Coast provide opportunities to photograph large congregating flocks.
Position yourself low near the water's edge to capture eye-level shots that emphasise the bird's vivid bill & facial colouring against a blurred background. Photograph during the golden hour when warm light enhances the contrast between the white plumage & red facial features. Focus on large foraging flocks in shallow water to capture dynamic behavioural interactions & flight shots as birds move between feeding areas.
