Spain does not get talked about as a wildlife photography destination the way Africa or Costa Rica do, & that is precisely what makes it valuable to photographers who already have a full portfolio of safari & rainforest work.

The Iberian Lynx is the draw - one of the rarest cats on the planet, worked entirely from hides at close range, in light that changes completely between our winter & summer departures. Pui Hang Miles guides both lynx trips & has built the itinerary around specific, known territories rather than general searching.

Beyond the lynx, Extremadura & Northern Spain give you a different kind of density - raptors. Golden Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Bonelli’s Eagle & Black Kite are all realistic targets across a single week, worked from hides positioned for flight paths & feeding behaviour rather than chance encounters. Ian Roberts guides both bird-focused trips, & the emphasis throughout is on repeatable access to specific species rather than a broad, thin checklist.

What makes Spain work so well as a hide destination is infrastructure built up over years of relationships with local landowners & estates. These aren’t public hides open to anyone who turns up - they’re positioned by people who know exactly where a given lynx territory sits or which cliff face a Griffon Vulture colony favours, which is the difference between a week of hoping & a week of genuinely productive sessions.

Our Spain Photography Holidays

We run four small-group trips to Spain, split between hide-based Iberian Lynx photography & raptor-focused itineraries. Here are the next departures for each:

9th - 14th Dec 2026 - Iberian Lynx of the Spanish Winter

6 nights | from £1,999 | Easy - Gentle Adventures, Accessible to Most

Hide-based Iberian Lynx photography in winter light - low sun angles & bare vegetation make this the trip for clean, uncluttered sightings of one of the rarest cats in the world. Our shortest & most affordable Spain trip, & a strong option if the lynx is your primary target.

4th - 11th Apr 2027 - Birds of Extremadura

7 nights | from £3,749 | Easy - Gentle Adventures, Accessible to Most

A raptor-focused week on the Extremaduran plains - Golden Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Booted Eagle, Black Kite & Red Kite all feature, alongside Lesser Kestrel & Red Fox on the same estate. Spring timing puts the resident raptors at their most active around nesting territories.

More info on Birds of Extremadura

11th - 18th Apr 2027 - Birdlife of Northern Spain

6 nights | from £2,299 | Easy - Gentle Adventures, Accessible to Most

Mountain & woodland birds with flexible hide sessions - Bonelli’s Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Eurasian Hoopoe & European Bee-eater across a varied sierra landscape. The mountain setting gives a different backdrop to the flatter plains of Extremadura.

5th - 10th Jul 2027 - Iberian Lynx in Summer

6 nights | from £1,999 | Easy - Gentle Adventures, Accessible to Most

Iberian Lynx photographed from hides at dusk - summer light & longer evenings extend the usable shooting window compared with the winter departure, giving more time in the hide per session.

What You’ll Photograph in Spain

Iberian Lynx

The Iberian Lynx is the rarest wild cat species in the world, & both of our Spain lynx trips work known territories from fixed hides rather than searching open ground. The winter departure gives you low, raking light & bare vegetation for clean sightings; the summer departure works dusk sessions with longer evening light.

Because sightings come from fixed hide positions rather than a moving vehicle, composition is largely down to patience - waiting for the cat to move into clean ground rather than photographing through vegetation. A long lens & a tripod or bean bag are essential; sessions can run for hours before the cat appears.

Raptors of the Sierras

Golden Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Bonelli’s Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Booted Eagle, Black Kite, Red Kite & Common Buzzard all feature across Birds of Extremadura & Birdlife of Northern Spain, worked from hides positioned for flight lines & feeding behaviour. See more in our Birds photo archive.

Vulture hides in particular reward an understanding of thermals & wind direction - birds circle & stack in numbers around a feeding site once the day warms up, giving you both close perched portraits early & dramatic flight shots as activity builds through the morning.

Steppe & Woodland Birds

Away from the raptor hides, Extremadura & Northern Spain both offer smaller, colourful subjects - Eurasian Hoopoe, European Bee-eater, Azure-winged Magpie & Lesser Kestrel all show up around the same estates, giving you a change of pace between the bigger set-piece raptor sessions.

These smaller species tend to favour old olive groves & farm buildings for nesting, so working them well often means a shorter lens & closer, more intimate compositions than the wide-open raptor work elsewhere in the same trip.

Red Fox

Red Fox is a reliable secondary subject on Birds of Extremadura, often working the same estate & hide positions as the resident raptors, giving you a mammal subject without needing to give up a session at the bird hides.

When to Visit Spain

The lynx trips run in December & July, giving you a genuine choice between winter’s low, raking light against sparse vegetation & summer’s longer dusk sessions. The raptor trips both run in April, timed around spring nesting activity when Extremadura & Northern Spain’s resident eagles & vultures are at their most active & predictable around known territories.

Planning Your Trip to Spain

Hide photography rewards a specific mindset that differs from the vehicle-based work most safari photographers are used to. Sessions can run for several hours in a fixed position, often in a small shared space with fellow guests, waiting for a lynx to move into clean ground or a vulture colony to build activity as the day warms. Bring a comfortable seat cushion, warm layers for the winter lynx trip especially, & patience - the difference between a session that produces nothing & one that produces a career image is very often simply staying put for the last twenty minutes rather than giving up early.

Because both the lynx & raptor trips work known, specific hide positions rather than covering wide territory, group sizes stay deliberately small - there is only so much room in a hide, & Pui Hang & Ian both prioritise giving every guest a genuine, unobstructed view over filling every available space.

The four wildlife photo tours also give a useful way to build a Spain itinerary around your own calendar - pairing a December lynx trip with a return visit in April for the raptors, for example, gives a genuinely rounded picture of the country’s wildlife across two very different seasons without needing to compromise on either.

Join Us in Spain

Spain rewards photographers who want highly specific, repeatable access to rare or difficult subjects rather than a broad checklist - a rare cat worked from a fixed hide, or a raptor species you can plan a whole week around.

Both Pui Hang & Ian know these hides & territories intimately, which is what turns a week in Spain into a genuinely focused body of work rather than a scattergun search. Spain is also one of the easiest destinations in the whole series to combine with a short break elsewhere in the country, since the hide locations sit within reach of several regional airports.
