Species profile
About this species
The Eurasian Spoonbill is a large white wading bird belonging to the ibis family Threskiornithidae, recognised by its distinctive spatula-shaped bill. It breeds across parts of Europe, Asia & Africa, typically nesting in colonies in wetland habitats. Adults develop a yellowish breast patch & ornamental crest feathers during the breeding season.
Eurasian Spoonbills favour shallow freshwater & coastal wetlands, including estuaries, lagoons, marshes & mudflats where they can wade & sweep their bills through the water to catch fish, crustaceans & aquatic invertebrates.

Field notes
Photography notes
Early morning during spring & summer offers the best light & activity, particularly at feeding sites during an incoming tide. The breeding season from April to July provides opportunities to photograph courtship displays & colony behaviour.
Position yourself low to the water to capture eye-level shots that emphasise the bird's elegant form & distinctive spoon-shaped bill. Focus on the bill during feeding activity as the bird sweeps it side to side through shallow water, creating dynamic & characterful images. Use a telephoto lens of at least 500mm to maintain a respectful distance & avoid disturbing nesting or feeding birds.
