There’s a particular stillness that comes before a Fiery-throated Hummingbird arrives at altitude, wings catching the thin highland light before the bird itself registers. At 2,000 metres or more in the Talamanca range, cold mornings & flowering shrubs bring these birds close enough to fill a frame without a long lens, & the sessions here are built to let that happen more than once.
Lower down, in the humid Caribbean foothills & river corridors, the Keel-billed Toucan works fruiting trees at a pace that rewards patience rather than luck, its bill catching morning sun in a way that no amount of processing recreates convincingly. By night, torchlight picks out the glassy eye of a Red-eyed Tree Frog on broad leaves near still water, a species that photographs best when nobody is rushing.
This trip has run every year since 2018, over eight years of refinement, with groups kept to a maximum of six photographers so that hide time, boat positioning & garden access all work in the photographer’s favour rather than the group’s convenience. David leads throughout, working with local guides who know exactly when King Vultures will commit to a carcass site, when the quetzals are calling in San Gerardo de Dota & which stretch of the Boca Tapada gardens holds hummingbird activity through the heat of the day. Access is arranged around behaviour, not around a fixed itinerary that ignores what the animals are actually doing.
Photographers leave with a body of work that spans open-country flight shots, macro frames of frogs & reptiles, canopy portraits of toucans & aracaris, & quiet highland studies of a bird many spend years trying to see well, let alone photograph properly. Beyond the images, there’s the experience of sixteen days in a country that rewards unhurried fieldcraft, in the company of a small group & guides who know exactly where to be, & when.
Who This Trip Is For
This is suited to photographers who want depth over breadth, & who are prepared to work a location over several days rather than expect instant results. Costa Rica’s biodiversity means the photographic opportunities are constant, but many of the strongest images come from patience at feeders, hides & known perches rather than opportunistic encounters.
Physically the trip is graded easy, with gentle walking & vehicle-based access to most sites, making it accessible to most reasonably fit photographers. Technically it sits at intermediate level: multi-flash hummingbird work, low-light hide photography & boat-based shooting of moving subjects all reward photographers who are already comfortable with their equipment & can adjust settings quickly as conditions change.
A second camera body is worth bringing given the range of subjects & the pace between locations, from fast-moving hummingbirds to slower, considered frog & reptile macro work in the humid lowlands. A macro or close-focus lens opens up the poison dart frogs & glass frogs encountered on foot, while a tripod or monopod earns its place during the multi-flash sessions & any longer lens work from hides. Wet-weather protection for camera gear is essential given the humidity & the boat-based sessions, & a reliable means of backing up images each evening is worthwhile over a trip of this length.
This suits photographers who enjoy full days & occasional night sessions, who prefer small groups with genuine field guidance, & who want to come home with a broad, well-worked set of images from one of the most productive photography destinations in Central America.
The Experience
This trip runs across sixteen days & moves through six distinct regions, giving each habitat enough time to produce results rather than rushing through on a checklist. The pace is deliberate: several nights in each location, structured around the light rather than the clock, with early starts for dawn photography & return sessions in the same locations when conditions or subject behaviour warrant it.
The route works from the Central Valley down to the Pacific lowlands at Tárcoles, up into the southern highlands around San Isidro & San Gerardo de Dota, across to the Caribbean side through Sarapiqui, Guápiles & Boca Tapada, then down into the wetlands of Cano Negro before finishing in the central highlands near San Ramón. Each transfer has a purpose, moving the group into a new set of species & a new set of light conditions rather than covering ground for its own sake.
Accommodation is small lodges throughout, chosen for proximity to the birds, feeders & forest edges rather than for scale. Single occupancy is provided as standard, so there’s no need to negotiate room space or storage for gear. Meals are taken on a half board basis, timed around the photography sessions rather than the other way round.
Field days are structured around the behaviour of the subject. King vulture sessions run from hides in the morning when the birds are most active at carcasses. Hummingbird photography at Boca Tapada uses multi-flash setups in the afternoon, a technique that rewards patience & repetition over several sessions rather than a single visit. Quetzal photography around San Gerardo de Dota runs across multiple mornings, with a final dedicated session before moving on, reflecting how unreliable a single sighting can be with this species. Boat-based work at Tárcoles & later at Cano Negro gives low, quiet approaches to crocodiles, waterbirds & wetland species that can’t be reached on foot.
Group size is capped at six photographers, with David guiding throughout & local guides brought in for site-specific knowledge, particularly around hide positioning & subject habits at each lodge.
